"An effective redevelopment project has turned a former movie theater complex into a recreation and conference center. At the end of April, the Washington Twp. recreation center opened its newest facility Rec West. Formerly, the Centerville Cinemas, Rec West is a community center with about 39,000 square feet of space available for additional programs provided by the township recreation department. It also offers meeting facilities for corporate events. Rec West was formerly a commercial movie theater next to the Washington Twp. Recreation Center on Miamisburg-Centerville Road. At the time, theater management provided rec center patrons a safe access to McEwen Road and offered overflow parking. When the cinema building went up for sale, Washington Twp. officials arranged for the purchase of the property in 2002. "The building has undergone an incredible transformation inside. With the exception of one theater, patrons may not even recognize the facility," said Linda Madden, senior recreation supervisor. "This will be an exciting space for all age groups. Although there will be a teen center, this building will offer activities for all ages."
